How to create a survey in 7 easy steps

Creating an online survey is easy. But creating a survey that is also well-organized, easy to answer, and that provides valuable data is not. Below are 7 helpful tips for creating a survey that will get you the answers you want.

  1. What do I need to know? Before you start with creating your questionnaire, you should decide on what exact information you need to know. What insight do you wish to get from your survey? This helps to focus on what matters and keep your questionnaire short and concise.
  2. What questions do I need to ask? Now that you know what information you need, think about the questions that you have to ask to get those answers. Ask simple and unambiguous questions, try to avoid long and unnecessary complex questions.
  3. Remove unnecessary questions. Go through your questionnaire and for each question ask yourself "Is this absolutely needed to get the required results?". If it is not, remove the question. A short questionnaire is key for a high response rate.
  4. Put the questions in the right order. Now that you have all the questions ready, bring them in the right order. Ask the most important questions first. That way, even if a participant drops out early, you still have response data to use.
  5. Split long questionnaires into pages. Group your questions by topic and put them into individual pages. This will provide your participants with a more organized experience and is more inviting than seeing all questions at once.
  6. Use logic to only show relevant questions. With Skip Logic and Display Logic you can hide away irrelevant questions and let your participants focus on the questions that matter. A shorter and more relevant questionnaire will result in higher completion rates.
  7. Test your online survey. Create a survey link, share it with a couple of colleagues and take the survey also yourself. This will let you find possible issues with your questions, and also collect some sample results for you to look at. Do the results answer what you need to know? Or do you need to rephrase or change the questions?

With these tips, you can create a survey that will give you the answers you want and help you make better decisions!
